stuck on the hill

i was driving doing good speed. when i step on the gas the rpm starting going high and i was not gong any where. could it be that is my clutch. there was a strange smell coming out my car. sorry if it doesn't make that much sense having good drink.

You have an automatic transmission?

If you do, it's probably your torque converter slipping... which means the fluid level could be low.

mazdarally94 July-9th-2003 09:15 AM

yeah.. check the fluid level.

I remember it happened to me once. i thought i screw my tranny but when i check the oil, it had nothing.

If your manual it's your clutch that's finish time for a new one

hoodsum July-9th-2003 11:58 AM

ya i think it is the clutch too

limpgtx July-9th-2003 01:25 PM

clutch time

up the hill like a turtle.

i got the clutch change but it seems that i still don't have power going up the hills. the clutch is fine. what can it be

jporky99 July-27th-2003 06:47 PM

if the revs are still going up and the clutch is definately ok then something isnt right. because if the clutch is definately ok, the car would stall out instead of revs increasing.

the general flow for our car is something like...
ENGINE->CLUTCH->GEARBOX->TRANSAXLE->AXLES->WHEELS

so it makes sense that the clutch must be the problem.
going up a hill in 3rd gear for example would result in a drop in rpms due to gravity pulling down on the car.

the fact that pressing on the gas does nothing for the forward momentum of the car, and only revs the engine could only mean that the clutch isnt ok and would probably cost ~500 dollars to fix.

the reason the clutch isnt slipping on flat surfaces is because the torque applied to the assembly isnt high enough to make it do so.

try launching your car.... rev it up to about 2500rpms and pop your clutch. if your clutch doesnt bite, its barely alive and it would be dangerous for you to continue driving w/o getting it repaired.

that's my $.02

If it smelled kinda fishy, then its your clutch.
Rather than launching your car, I've never heard of doing that to check if a clutch is good or not, do this: Get going about 40-50KMH, and put the car in 5th gear. then floor it, if both your rpm and speed slowly creep up at roughly the same rate then your clutch is fine. If your revs raise really quickly, or not even that quickly but they go up and your speed doesn't increase, then your clutch is slipping, replace it.
Oh yeah porky, the gearbox is the same as the transaxle.

still now power

Regardless, you said that you put your foot on the gas, revs went up but speed didn't, unless you had the car in neutral, I'd say that you got a defective replacement clutch, or there is oil or some contaminant on the clutch disk. Do you have an oil leak at the rear main seal perhaps??

hoodsum July-27th-2003 11:38 PM

like i said i replaced the clutch. but i 'm still losing power

zenilder July-28th-2003 01:41 PM

check the piston on the clutch slave cylinder. make sure that it barely sits against the fork. if it's pushing on the fork, the clutch won't be engaged fully. it's on the part of the gearbox facing the front of the car. you should be able to see it clearly if you put the car on a lift. you can prolly make do with a floor jack.

new problem

car will not start with out a boost . i drove for 15 and when i shut off the car it didn't start. i don't know if it is the batery or the alternator.

ps. i think my daughter left the light and it killded the battery

jporky99 July-30th-2003 10:38 PM

does it crank? do the doorlights turn on when the door opens? can u turn on your radio? do the headlights turn on when you try? does your cigarette lighter work?

if you answer "no" to any of these questions, it is my $.02 that the battery is probably dead.

if you answer "yes" to some or all of these questions, it is my $.02 that i am not anywhere near qualified to theorize on your problem.

p.s. so now you have a car that has a slipping clutch, and wont start?
