Phantom Grip LSD

I was wondering if anyone had heard anything about this differential and if it is any good. I am swapping a BP 1.8 DOHC engine into my car and will be using my stock 1.6 SOHC tranny for now but would like to rebuild and upgrade to the Protege LX(GT) tranny later and saw that the Phantom Grip LSD was only $159 from MMRacing for this transmission. How much difference in performance will there be? This seems to be a pretty good price if is of decent quality. It sure beats the price of the Corksport one. What do you guys think?

the two designs aren't that dissimilar - both using large blocks and springs to lock up the spider gears in a clutch-like process. I can't comment on the performance/quality of the phantom grip- but I did race with an OPM unit for a season in a Miata and it perfromed quite well. It's far better than a viscous but not near the lock up of a torsen. It looks as though the conversion is up to you with the phantom grip (OPM is a core swap for your open unit), and who knows what kind of a job that is. I know that with the opm unit if you take it apart it'll REALLY come apart- those blocks are under some serious tension. So you might find out what it's going to take to install the phantom in your diff/transaxle. The price sure seems cheap- enough to make one suspicious. - rob

Another possibility is the LSD from the Mazdaspeed Protege. Mazda is apparently selling them cheap....IF you can find one. I think price is around 400.

mazdamotorsports.com doesn't have it?

I've heard good things about the phantom grip. Maybe not the best choice for hardcore racers, but for street use it would be better than an open diff. One wheel burnouts lead to wear on the diff carrier pin, which usually leads to an exploded diff.

Not sure if this is a problem with the mazda 5 speeds, but a few v8 Fiero/ getrag 5 speed combo's have had that problem, and I've heard a phantom grip helped out a lot.

These are interchangable?
Hmm....
Maybe an LSD is in my future!:bt:
I just can't justify the high price of the Quaffe.

I agree- but it seems to work and it's cheap.

A TRUE clutch lsd is a good option with progressive lock up, rebuildability and relatively affordable. - rob

MazdaSpeed Protege?

The LSD from a MazdaSpeed Protege will work in a BG Protege tranny? I didn't realize the new Proteges were still so similar. I really would have no idea if that is even possible since I am fairly new to all this. I do hope it's true though.

For a while there, I thought that the Quaffe was the only one available and at that price, I will never get one. I'm sure they are good, but very expensive IMO.

does anyone know if the MS Protege LSD would fit in a MX-6 V-6 tranny?

BobbyCoffins March-24th-2003 04:13 AM

are the new Protege's still using the G15M-R?

i think the G15M-R is the same as the G25M-R except for the bellhousing.

BobbyCoffins March-24th-2003 11:51 AM

would anyone have a part number for it? can you get them at a dealership?

The Probe croud seems to like the PG unit, but I agree with Jesse about the abuse issue since they weren't designed for it.

If it were me I would much rather go with the OPM unit because you are dealing with decent people (I have heard bad things about customer service types at PG) and I think it would be a better deal in the long run.... but its up to you.

Does it fit ?

Oracle_SOD February-24th-2004 01:48 AM

There is a guy on www.clubprotege.com with thr GTR swap who has it installed on his 1st gen. He is on here too, but Im not sure if he posts here anymore. I think it had to be modified, but i don't know the details. Search/ask around on clubprotege.
