Need help again

I'm sorry for being dumb at mechanic :)

I changed my spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor

I started the car and ZOOMMMM it started like never before!

also, while doing that... i removed the damn heat shield over the manifold since it was gonna fall one day... the bolts looks like to be welded in the manifold lol and the heat shield was rusted like you can't imagine.... just to let you know... i removed it without any tools... with my hands hehehe!

also i removed the resonator (the thing over the radiator) I know some of you says that it fixes something in mid-range rpm but anyway I plan to install an intake this summer... i don't think it's the cause of my problem.

here is the problem:
the car idles great but, at random it shut off..... sometimes it looks like to try to stay on like it's going to 2000rpm then down to 0rpm then 2000rpm then 0 ....... sometimes it returns to a normal idle, sometimes it shut off....

so, if someone have any idea of what could be wrong....
I bought parts that is suposed to replace like OEM..... and the spark plugs are NGK BKR5EGP

btw, Everything else on my car is stock...
I know i'm gonna have great answers, Thank You !!!

Does your idle drops really bad when u turn ur lights on? if it does u might have the common "idle droop" on Mazdas. try to do a search about it and you'll find some useful stuff.

put your heat shield back on!

demoninvictus April-7th-2003 05:09 AM

don't fix it if it ain't broken... and definately, if it is broken, replace it. the heat shield does serve a purpose on your car, buy a new one or a fairly good one from a junkyard. as far as removing your resonator, i'd put the damn thing back on as well. leave everything run stock, since that is all you have, a stock engine with stock parts. feel free, tear apart your car, but for heaven's sake, leave it so it will run properly.
peace

ok guys i got news.... i spent 4 hours at the mechanic shop.... my car is running sooooo rich the smoke coming from the exaust is BLACK !! lol

they checked the fuel pressure, the MAS or VAF or what ever you call it.... they checked the computer,, they replaced it with another one so it's not the computer the problem....

my new spark plug from sunday are SOOOO BLACK I can't believe they are still working !!

anyway, they are suposed to let the other (most experienced) mechanic guy check it tomorow...

soo... i'm crying... what's the problem!!! the car can't be that much damaged only because i change spark plug, wires and rotor plus distributor cap....
it's so weird :(

when the car is cold it runs great... and 2-3 minutes later it is starting to die.... when reving the engin it looks like if the exhaust was blocked... but it's not lol in fact its because the fuel isnt burning or something like that...

well..... I will let you know what they find (if they find anything) tomorow.....

TheMAN April-7th-2003 06:40 PM

yeah, it's weird when you:

-changed the spark plugs without checking or regapping them and wires and rotor
-messed with the distributor without retiming the igntion
-removed the heatshield and air intake resonator

Changing the cap and rotor won't affect the timing, but whatever.

well....... why gap the spark plug... they are gaped for my car allready and .... messed with the distributor??? I didn't even touch it, I only pulled the rotor and replaced the new one in same position, heat shield and resonator... so? that thing make bad mixture... LOL

sturat April-7th-2003 07:44 PM

When you removed the resonator did you cover the hole up with something? If not that's likely causing your idle problem...I'd recommend putting it back on

OK I got my car this morning, they found that the temperature sensor (one of them) was causing the problem... instead of telling the computer that the colling system is at like 40° it was saying -40° lol

so the computer was always trying to choke!!! almost no air coming, only fuel!!!
they changed that sensor and now the car runs just great as it was before! so.... like I said , the problem could not have been because i changed my spark plug lol!!

so, if anyone got a problem like the car wants to die sometimes, lets say like 8-9 times a year..... then maybe you could change that sensor... I had this intermitent problem but now that the sensor was totally dead, the car wasnt running great hehe!!

anyway, cya in another post!

TheMAN April-9th-2003 08:37 PM

I guess messing with the intake finally killed the sensor :D
