ne ideas...

this week im going to start taking my motor apart...im gonna be changing my water pump (cuz its shot and pissing all over) my head gasket (because it is leaking) my valve seals (cuz theyre finished) and my timing belt...is there anything else i should consider changing or doing (keeping in mind im not rich)while i have the motor appart????

UCSBgeek November-10th-2003 08:22 PM

maybe you should just switch your whole motor ;)

90_Protege November-10th-2003 08:53 PM

the thought crossed my mind....beleave me..i was also considering getting rid of it and cutting my losses...but its my first car and it drives nice an i think its got a lot of petential also i have the tools and stuff to do the minor work that is needed...i dont have the tools and time plus money to change the motor...but in the future i plan on goin all out an puttin in a 2.2 L turbo but thas just a dream right now..but i wont give up on my protege ..no matter what problems cross my path..id rebuild it front to back before i turn it into a pop can

UCSBgeek November-12th-2003 12:28 AM

Are you talking about the probe 2.2L turbo?? I don't know about you, but I'd go for a different engine. Look for the BPT turbo 1.8 or a KL-ZE V6 maybe

it wont be a while until i think about swaping engines...but i just want to do sumthing different...the klze would be nice tho...and i see bp and bpt ...what does it mean??

bp = Mazda's 1.6L/1.8L block.
bpt = turbo version of the 1.6L/1.8L block.

the 1.6L engines arent bp or bpt they are b6 and b6t

90_protege dont forget to check for rotted hoses. they are killers, i should know, (dont ask)

90_Protege November-13th-2003 07:34 PM

yah...i have a feeling that after i begin to take it all apart im going to end up spending a little more money...hopefully not a lot more....

macdaddyslomo November-13th-2003 07:51 PM

yeah you could re hone the cylinder walls and put on new piston rings...acid dip the block

90_Protege November-13th-2003 08:34 PM

na...im not pullin the motor out...just gonna pull the head off....i was thinking of sending the head out to be machined ....what do you guys think???

bivery November-13th-2003 10:25 PM

i was told when one changes ones head gasket, one should pressure task the head (to check for cracks) and have the head shaved to assure a better seal.

90_Protege November-14th-2003 03:11 PM

ya apparently these heads are prone to cracking..atleast thats what i was told

bivery November-14th-2003 03:49 PM

never heard of anyone cracking a bp head maybe you re think of the honda b16.

90_Protege November-14th-2003 04:16 PM

this guy at my work used to be a service manager at a mazda dealership....he told me that...i dont know...i dont think mines cracked tho..
