n00b swap questions/already searched

first of all, i am obviously new to the board. I recently got a 92dx sohc pro. i am trying to get in my research for a motor swap early on. i am used to nissan and honda motor swaps both, and have either done or assisted with more than a few, however as i do not personally know alot of ppl that own mazdas, and this is only my second mazda, i need some assistance. I need to find all of the info & materials to swap either a gtx or gtr motor into my car. (essentially i want a turbo motor that was originally in a pro or a similar car for ease of finding replacement parts & maintanence items) i have searched to no real avail and i need to things- somewhere to locate the parts that i need and a how-to for anything that may be particular to this swap. any help would be appreciated.

i don't think I can help you much. As far as I know there is no "how-to" for motor swaps. Here's what I'd do to check which pieces will fit.

1. look up all modles of protege for 1992.

2. see if a 1.8L turbo option was offered.

3. get on www.car-parts.com and start hunting for the main pieces.

You'll know you'll need engine/tranny mounts (unless you already have a 1.8L BP engine), turbo system, engine, etc. I could really help you better if I knew more abouyt your exact model. I don't know a whole lot about 1st or 2nd gens myself.

well, this is all i know so far, trim level = DX, apparently a 1.8 sohc motor, after searching, i found a couple of threads, but i cannot seem to locate a model list as to trim levels and whatever motors they had.

perhaps "how- to" isn't the right term btw....i am just trying to make sure that there is nothing that i need to know other than where to locate parts & the motor (i.e.: problems specific to such an install in my car). thanks to you and anyone else who might chime in with some info.

if there was a BP engine model offered in that year/body you should have no problem just buying a BP-T engine and bolting it in. You'd need all of the BP mounting points, ecu, wiring, tranny etc.

do a search for "protege faq" it's by a guy named Edwin. He has a lot of first gen and BP-T stuff.

be more specific. what do you want, goals, estimated whp, etc.

As far as goals & whatnot, i want to keep some amount of reliabiliy, but i would like to get 160-180 whp with a solid suspension (autX worthy) and full interior with a modest, clean exterior. it will see some autx abuse, but not alot.

come on man, shoot higher than that. stock bpt swap with stock exhaust (1 7/8ths) and harp pipes = 178-180 whp lol

well shit, i didn't know it would give me that much to start with, let's add another hundred hp to that goal then lol.

*edit* btw, this is the information that i need to know......i was under the impression that the gtx motor was good for 180 to the flywheel and that the bpt from the gtr was somewhere in the neighborhood of 200+ at the crank, but i honestly cannot devote a weeks worth of hours into locating this sort of stuff.

Liquid_Ag March-8th-2006 10:42 PM

well what else do you want to know

p7teb7 March-11th-2006 03:00 PM

well, i have located a couple of places where i can get the motor, i guess what i specifically need to know at this point is if i can use my stock tranny, if the mount points match or if i would have to come up with some custom ones and if the oe wiring harness will suffice.

Liquid_Ag March-12th-2006 01:52 AM

yes tranny will fit. have to splice some wires on the harness, probably want stand alone or gtx ecu

prakashkamath March-24th-2006 12:46 PM

NO you cannot use your stock tranny. remember he has a dx, which means he has a k series tranny. you will need to find yourself a g series tranny. you should have not problem finding one in a junk yard. they came in the lx protege's that had the bp engine. it will be strong enough to hold up to the gtx. k series will fry in no time.

what? he has a F series

prakashkamath August-1st-2006 12:07 PM

the f series tranny was meant for the sohc b8 engine which put out about 100 hp. (at the crank.) it is not meant to handle very much power. the g series that can with the dohc bp engine should work fine. i know several people that have done the bpt swap with the g series, and it holds up well. more info can be found at imazda.com. do a search. there is even a guy selling off his turbo setup. infini gtr is his name.
