Miata Stock Flywheel Swap
 

hello everyone,

just to let you know, if you are looking into getting a new flywheel for you bp, a miata 1.6l (89-93) flywheel will bolt up to your 1.8l. The benefit from this is that the miata flywheel will give improved acceleration and deceleration. It is smaller than the 1.8l flywheel and is approx. 2.5 pounds less than the stock 1.8l flywheel.

IMO the best time to due this swap would be if your clutch needs to be repaired. Buy a 1.6l aftermarket clutch* and grab the flywheel from a j/y. Then you are killing two birds with one stone :)

Just something to remember if you heading into a junkyard and see a 1.6l miata :)


*sidenote: The miata 1.6l flywheel will not interchange with a 1.8l clutch due to different bolt patterns. If you are serious about this swap, i would reccomend an aftermarket 1.6l clutch since the stock 1.6l clutchi snt designed to handle as much hp as a stock 1.8l clutch, so stay on the safe side*

How is the clutch engagement? Does it grab right off the floor or is it pretty much the same as stock?

The 'stacked height' of the 2 assemblies are different....when i tried to get a mechanic to install a 1.6 Fidanza/clutch kit, he told me + showed me it wouldn't work because of this. Not because it wouldn't bolt-up - but because of what he thought would be clutch engagement problems. I tried to talk him into doing it; but because of time constraints and his doubts, he ended up convincing me it wouldn't work.....

Smaller as in Smaller diameter??
How do you start your engine??

same diameter flywheel, smaller 'clutch surface' area.

the BP Pro and BP Miata flywheels both have risers along the outside edge for the pressure plate to bolt to; and the BP Pro's flywheel is actually a *somewhat* heavier duty design than even the BP Miata.

the 1.6 Miata flywheel has NO risers - just guide pins for the pressure plate that bolts directly to the flywheel surface. Just like a Honda flywheel.

96+ BP powered protege don't have the risers on them
95-98 Z5 protege don't have risers

IIRC i think that's due to the switch to the F-series trans?? Similar to the SOHC 1st gen with the F-series...

Not that I doubt what has been said here, but has anyone tried this?? I've got access to a Miata 1.6l flywheel, but don't want to waste my time and buy a clutch etc fi there are problems. Does the Clutch disc work with thge input shaft?? Ie: same # of splines and so on??

When I replaced my engine about a one and a half years ago, I was able to see my clutch and flywheel. I have no risers on my flywheel. Like the other guy said, the Fseries gearbox doesn't need the risers on the flywheel.

...So those who have a SOHC engine can make the swap. The question here is what midnightblue brought up--do the splines match?

If they do then there ya go.

Fseries gearbox + LSD + 1.6 Miata FW/C = awesome.
