Miata shared components
 

OK..so I keep finding the DOHC 1st gen moter listed as either BPD or BP-ZE. The Miata 94-97 engine is listed as BP-ZE though I have seen it as BPD so I do believe they are the same core. However do to the Miata being rearwheel drive I have to assume that many external parts and bolt-ons for the Miata will not work w/ our cars. (also the tranny's, too bad since there are some really nice Miata tranmision options) So the question is this, what parts cross over? I assume that intake and exaughst and forced induction kits are no goes but what about intake manifolds? Flywheels? Pistons? anything else?

Ams, lifters pistons, rods, crank, pre 99 cylinderheads. Flywheels, clutches, underdrive pulleys.

Not sure, check the archives. There was someone that did an NA buildup, but I can't remeber who. Their results weren't so great anyways. The stock ECU was holding them back. I think they were struggling to get ~120WHP.

struggling w/ 120whp? isn't the DOHC allready rated at 125? plus I thought that the Pro-s used an open ended MAP type sensor...Does it use a chart based MAF sensor instead? I'm going to be really upset if I find out that Mazda was just as backward as Ford was in the early 90's

It really uses a chart based system? No kidding, when did it switch over to a open ended system, 95?

VAF sensor = early version MAF sensor.

It's rated at 125hp at the flywheel. The Pro probably puts somewhere from 80-100 hp at the wheels (whp).

ahhhh...making sense now. Is the chart very restrictive like it was on my old Tempo or does it allow for a little lee-way in modification? What about FI upgrades?

if you are interested in doing an n/a buildup and have a chance to rip the motor apart getting 2001 miata 10:1 pistons should definately be on your list. They will fit no problem into your bp. I picked up a set for $130 canadian and i would imagine you can find them for around that price elsewhere. The 99-2000 cams should drop in nicely giving a little extra punch. I figure that using the 99 miata cams, 2001 pistons and a genie header you should be hitting 115 at the wheels no problem, have fantastic throttle responce and a great powerband. 115 doesnt sound like much, but with the stronger powerband it let you eat civics for breakfast.
If you have the know how, porting and polishing the head wont take very long to do a @home kinda job and will give you a nice little gain in performance for no $ since the head will be exposed anyways while your dropping the cams and putting on the header.
