Miata engine in protege...

Hi guys,

I have a 1993 protege se (canadian) with the little 1.8l sohc 103hp:(, I was wondering if it's possible to fit a miata engine on my stock tranny.

Both engines have 1839cc but the engine from the cdn miata was 140hp.

Do you know how much the engine would cost?

Thanks.:blue:

mazdaspeedwest December-12th-2001 12:56 PM

that would cost a HELLUVA lot of cash, since the Miata engine is transverse and RWD!!!!

sorry man, find a Protege GT with the 1.8L DOHC or grab a BPTurbo motor.

Is the BP protege the one with the turbo? If yes, i'm not really interested because I went to visit 3 of the best shops we have and they were asking from 4250 to 4500cdn (around 2200us) for the swap.

The best shop that I visit told me they could swap me a V6 2.5l jdm(200hp) for 3000$ cdn (about 1500us), but it's still alot of money and i'm really afraid it would affect the handling to much.:dunno:

I tried a 1996 civic coupe with a H22, the handling really sucked an I don't want the same thing for my protege.

Here in canada we didn't get any escort GT since the early 90's and the only engines I can find are old and have alot of millage.

Jusr find the head at a yard, get it reconditionned and do the head swap yourself. Where are you in Canada? I'm in Montreal, and I know of a few guys that have done it themselves that you can talk to... If I can find their e-mail addresses.... That's what I'm plamming on doing. Even with labour, a buddy of mine had it all done for 200$ in parts... I dunno how true it was, I'm trying to confirm as we speak. For alittle more, you can get all your rings and gaskets changed while the head is off...

By the way, does anyone know of a thicker head gasket available that'd raise compression? I think I'm gonna go N/A afterall... Blowjax baby! shooow!

3500usd:eek:

The reason is that most of the guys that work at the speed shops are friends that I've met from the street racing nights and they are giving me good prices because we are all hate the same poeple from the same crew.

Here in montreal we have a crew of guys with hondas (lowlife) and they think they are the shit, they all have a lot of $$$ because of their parents and they like to show it off a little to much.

Next year we will have our revenge.:D

I'll kill them with my sleeper mazda:bt:

Bizob: I didn't see your post before I posted mine.

I'm also from montreal.

Can you give me some news when you get some.:)

Do you know how much hp that would give us?

If I do that, I know a guy who as a shop and they are specilized in head porting (14 NHRA records) and I would probably send it to him to have it rebuilt.

You can check out his shop at http://www.tkmotion.com/

the V6 swap is a very good idea for a sleeper too....

Does somebody on this board have a 1st generation with a V6?

Still wondering about the handling...

mazdaspeedwest December-13th-2001 02:58 PM

in my research, i found the V6 dosen't weigh that much more than the 4cyl...infact, it may even be about the same...the 4cyl is a cast block and the V6 is an aluminum block. you may need the MX3 H&R springs, but thats about it.

White1stGen December-13th-2001 05:20 PM

Suspension won't be a problem, I am getting H&R sport springs and KYB shocks right after winter. I got a price of 980$ installed (about 500usd).

I'm also getting a complete brake system (hawk hp+ pads, brembo disks, SS lines, modul600...) for 500$cdn in spring.

The dohc head would be cool because I would have enough money right now to do my engine work, suspension and brakes (about 2 500$cdn or 1300$usd) .

mazdaspeedwest December-13th-2001 06:50 PM

resent findings have shown the SOHC and DOHC blocks to be identical. The piston to valve clearance is still an issue though, but looks good.

White1stGen December-13th-2001 07:44 PM

So if the block is identical are you telling me that the pistons are not?:dunno:

If I have to change the pistons as well i'm not sure I can do the job myself.

mazdaspeedwest December-13th-2001 10:43 PM

not sure yet, more info is needed...sorry

22hp at the flywheel. 103 to 125.

I know the 1.8l from honda is about 250lbs, so if the BP is around 300 the handling should not be to much of a problem.
