HOLD light flashing!

HOLD light flashing!
I just bought a 1994 Mazda Protege LX sedan automatic. When I put the car in Drive, the HOLD light flashes. I *think* that means there's a code in the transmission's computer sayng something's wrong.
Also, the speedometer doesn't work. All the other gauges work fine, but the speedometer does not. Maybe the sending unit is bad on the transmission?
If anyone has anything, I would really appreciate some insight.
