Head Swap ?'s

OK, I found out it's only a SOHC. Damn. I feel stupid now... I guess just because it's 16V doesn't make it DOHC.

But enough about me, onto the questions.

What do I all need (besides the head obviously) to do a head swap? Do I need to get a new crank pulley or ECU?
Also, what heads are interchangable? I've heard something about the Miata head, and isn't the 1.8L Escort GT the same head too?
And finally, what can I expect to pay for the head, if it's in good shape, complete? How much for a bare head?

Thanks a lot in advance for your answers, even though I'm sure these questions have been asked a million times.

If you're sure this question's been asked a million times, do a search.
Top right corner of your screen.
Off the top of my head.
Intake Manifold, probably the exhaust manifold, Timing belt, ECU, Distributor(?), ll related gaskets.
Cost?? I don't know, you might be able to find a deal at a Junkyard.
You can use the head from an Escort GT Miata, Pro, POssibly a Kia Sephia.

Wow... Kia Sephia... lol...

And I just noticed the search button after I posted, and found most of my answers. Thanks for pointing it out anyway!

Glad I could help a member named Bizob did the Swap I think, you might find some of his posts on it. I think thats who did it but I'm not 100%
I don't even know if it IS the sephia, but it is some model of kia

mazdprotege94 December-18th-2003 08:54 PM

you can use the kia sephia 95-97 1.8l DOHC head, protege DOHC 90-97,escort gt 90-94, and you have to change the water pump, timing belt, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, ign distributor, and remember you will not have the same power as a oem DOHC because the difference in compression but if you are not going to turbocharge you car you can use the miata pistons they are 10.0 comp also I recomend to use a BP09 ecu because the redline is 7500rpm and a AFM from a RX7 it has more flow, DOHC injectors.

I dont Know the cost in the states but here in the island I can buy a complete kia engine for about $850.00.

Pro2Go December-20th-2003 03:12 PM

Here in the states it's cheaper. There's a j/y down in Milwaukee (Wisconsin) where my buddy got a complete turbo motor (including turbo) for his Eclipse for $250 I'll try to find a phone number so we can see if they have any Pro's.

Good luck finding the engine
