Getting more air to the intake
 

Ok, I've got cone intake adapter replacing my factory air filter. I was wondering how I could get even more airflow to the intake. Would any of the following methods improve airflow:

- Making a sort of "ram air" system using a hood scoop above the air intake, directing more air to the intake as speed is increased

- Installing a fan near the intake pointing towards the intake.

This is a little harder to do on a 1st-gen Protege, requiring you to cut sheetmetal to accomplish.

Check out Mazdaspeedwest's (Darryl) site for info in getting cold air to the filter.

welll you could take out the passenger side corner light. THis will take a straight flow of air to the intake. or you can custom make a CAI tube to run from under car up to the intake.

Can you explain why the fans wouldn't work.

I totally agree about the fans...I had thought about that to. It wasn't until I thought about it that I realized it won't work...you need something along the lines of a supercharger to get the desired effect. What would be cool is if there is a way to get cowl induction to work on our cars.
As a side note, Arospeed makes a ram intake kit for the Civic that could possibly be mounted on our cars...it sits in behind the bumper and underneath the radiator. You would have to run your own custom duct work but it might be worth it.

Hey guys,

I think I found an excellent way to direct mass amounts of "fresh" air from outside the engine compartment into the engine compartment.

I just installed an AEM short arm ram on my p5 that, as you know, goes down toward the lower portion of the engine compartment....

Looking for a way to direct more "fresh" or "cold" air to the filter I have found that
under the car, just behind the most inferior black piece of plastic, there is a slot which opens into the engine compartment......just above this slot is where the AEM filter ends up sitting.

Anyway, I took a plastic dust pan and placed it in this slot, leaning toward the back of the car, and then secured it the best I could.

Holy shit!!!! You will not believe the amount of air that must be shooting into the engine compartment!!!

If you think the AEM intake works well, you will shit your pants when you step on the gas in second and third gear!!!

I cannot take pic b/c I do not have a digital camera...so maybe someone else can try this out and take a pic.

Also, if your try this out and find a good way to secure the pan (cut off the handle) then let me know.

I am convinced that mass amounts of air are being forced into the engine compartment from below!!!

Has anyone succesfully done a ram air sort of modification to their 1st gen? I seriously considered this for a while, and while the idea of a "white trash turbo" as I called it, seemed tempting, I didn't believe it would really work. However, according to some of you guys, this idea isn't so crazy, and I tend to agree.

Wil, I believe you mentioned having to cut a hole in the sheet metal, I believe you're talking about right under where the air cleaner sits correct? Sort of a little pocket between the fender and engine compartment?

I had contemplated the idea of using some kind of pvc pipe or maybe even a dryer hose to transfer the air to the intake. I never really found a good way to route the air though. I was mainly skeptical about my idea, and didn't want to have to start cutting metal for an idea I wasn't even sure of.

What would you guys use to route the air? If pvc pipe was used, I imagine you would have to seal the gaps in the pipe with something.....caulk? I was also confused about what I should put on the intake end of the ram air design. I was planning on mounting it underneath the front bumper. While a dustpan would look really stupid, I've been thinking the shape of it is pretty ideal.... anyone have any other ideas or suggestions?

Of course anything that was mounted under the bumper could be painted a flat black, and it probably wouldn't even be noticed. Still, I'm not real eager to bolt a rubbermaid dustpan to the bottom of my car....:D

We're working on moving the VAF down into the gap and running the PVC straight to there, and making a custom filter and using an air bypass to protect against major water, but the car is in the shop getting repainted at the moment.

that is most defntually the ugliest thing i have ever seen. i mean god bless you for trying it. but god damn. my buddy did something similer to this, only his looked half way decent. he went to a car wash, cut the hose off the big vacumes, and used the hose, and the vacume head for a ram air. it didnt look half as bulky as a big piece of pvp pipe. just a suggestion. not to flame you.

the PVC pipe shows too much...............you guys better find a way to hide that sucker or at least paint it the color of the car so it's not that obvious.....

well if you noticed jesse, i wasnt just flaming them, i was giving them suggestions also, on how to make it less "ugly" i mean i dunno maybe you wouldent mind making you car look dumb for a few extra horse power.

Our Priorities:

1st - Performance
2nd - Functionality
3rd - Documentation
4th - Looks



Secondly, it's painted black and pushed up under the bumper more (as stated in the pictures) so you don't notice it as much. It's exposed and white in the pictures in order for you to be able to see it for documenation purposes. When the car gets back from the paint shop I'll take some picturse and show you what it looks like now.


As stated by Jess Performance <> Looks. We'll put our SOHC BP engine up against any DOHC BP any day. No flame intended.


Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't vacuum hoses (if you're talking about hoses from a vacum cleaner, and not vacum hoses like for a car) don't have smooth interior surfaces, so air flow isn't as good as with PVC.

Has anyone tried the NACA ducts yet? We're thinking about trying that but I'm sceptical about cutting a whole in the hood of the car when it just got a paint job last week.


Anyone want to donate a hood for R & D purposes :-)
