Clutch slipping badly
 

Well I just finished up swapping the transmission in my 94 LX and the tranny shifts fine, but the clutch slips so bad it is not driveable! It seems like the clutch isn't engaging all the way because it only starts to grab when the pedal is more than 3/4 of the way up. The clutch pressure plate and disc and bearings are BRAND NEW. I have bled the release cylinder to death trying to fix it.

Here are my two ideas:
1. I swapped the release cylinder from my DOHC tranny onto the SOHC tranny, are these interchangeable?

2. I am really hopping this isn't the case but maybe an oil seal in there has failed which is lubricating the clutch and causing it to slip.

I am leaning toward the first idea because I think it isn't engaging all the way. Anyone have any input or ideas I could try it would be much appreciated.

when you swapped the tranny. you swapped the sohc tranny onto a dohc engine?

did you remmber to swap the flywheel? the 2 flywheels are very different, and you should always match the flywheel with the tranny. also did you tinker with the TO bearing?

That's correct SOHC tranny on DOHC engine.

Yes, the flywheel is the SOHC one, I could see they were completely different.

I replaced the throw-out bearing with a new one when I had the tranny out.

Two ideas:
Are you certain the clutch disc is oriented properly?
Did you bleed the clutch slave after reinstallation?

Thats where the clutch is suppose to engage/disengage. If someone tells you otherwise, they are wrong. Unless you have like a 3 puck disc and increased clamping force, then it would be normal for it to engage near the floor, if you still have the rubber clutch lines. Anyways, check the clutch pedal freeplay, maybe loosen it up a bit.

no it isn't

if you are suffering frm clutch slip and swapped a "f" series tranny for the "g" series tranny and left the "G" series flywheel you will get engagement issues. a protege cluch is suposed to engage at the 1/3 mark.

Yes I swapped the flywheels. I don't think it would have bolted up at all if I left the DOHC (sorry I don't remember off the top of my head which is F/G series) flywheel on there from what I saw. The thing I am concerned about is I used the DOHC clutch release(slave) cylinder on the SOHC tranny. Does anyone have any info on their interchangability?

you can pull out the rubber boot around the throw out bearing arm, and see the pressure plate and throw out bearing. get some one to push the clutch pedal and you can see whats going on.

similar thing happend to me a while back. turns out the throw out bearing that came with the clutch kit was to big. and was putting pressure on the pressure plate all the time.

Great idea! I will take off the rubber boot tommorow and check it out. I am hoping I don't have the wrong throwout bearing as in your case because I really don't want to pull the tranny out again:(

As I asked before: are you certain that you installed the clutch disc with the proper orientation?

I got it working today! Turns out I had the wrong clutch release cylinder on there so it wasn't letting off all the way. I was just driving her around a little bit and this car runs nice! It's got some power to it too.
