chance to get BIGGER intake valves...

hey guys, check out this link:

http://www.miataforum.com/ubb/ultima...c;f=1;t=011295

to sum it up, there is a guy getting 35mm intake valves custom made...he'd like to do this as a 'group buy' - $200 plus shipping for the 8 valves...

evidently it'll work with all BP heads - 1st gen and 2nd gen

any observations on the thead or the idea behind it??.......i'm thunking about doing it

doesn't the guy also say that you have to have the head reworked to get those to fit in ? I dunno man sounds exspensive to me. How long can you be without your car, me 1-2 days tops and whats the price behind having your head reworked ?

mazda disciple...

....i was thinking about it mainly from the idea of getting some parts together for the likely future rebuild.

IT WOULD take some time and cost some $$$ for a head job(unless you could do it yourself :) )...

just thought some may want to know about it!

and for Psuedo or whoever else
( a 'dumbby' question from the guy who posted the thread :) ) :
why EXACTLY does a larger valve give more power?
it SEEMS like the fact that it is bigger, thus takes up more space? would hinder flow.... :(

you mean that this would be better than a galvanized, wrong-flanged, Pacesetter tin can 'back of the cat' type thingy???? :)

on a more serious note....my engine has 200,000 miles; if the rings checked out OK with a compression test, do you think i could get away with JUST a head job INSTEAD of a complete rebuild? in other words, the internals of the BP would be 'healthy' enough to last maybe a 100,000 more miles??

the reason i ask is the valves may come in handy sooner than i think :)

protejay April-2nd-2002 12:40 AM

AHA!! i got it(i think...)

so the fact that the BP head is designed in such a way that it CAN accomodate a LARGER valve obviously means that the 'port' can also be enlarged...all of which results in better flow....! they all compliment each other...

thanks man for the reply - it helped my mind click! :)

all of this reminds me of the 91 brochure that says of the DOHC engine having 'bigger valves for deeper breathing at high rpm'

jay93dx April-2nd-2002 12:53 AM

Damn jesse you are the man.

protejay April-2nd-2002 01:30 AM

thanks again Psuedo, your 'block' info WAS interesting.... i just was wondering more about the actual 'mechanics' of installing the larger valves...it took my cranium a little time to connect the dots :_+))

and yes, i'd rather do the complete rebuild, but that will prob be a GOOD ways off and will take $$$$.... but since we're talking rebuild.....

i've seen the overbore wiseco pistons that can basically turn the BP into a 2.0; let's say you rebuild with those at a 10:1 compression, maybe higher....will you absolutely NEED a standalone? or is it NEEDED mainly to get the MOST out of the engine? i guess i'm asking if you'd be OK without it....

Group Buy

You mentioned the guy was looking for a group buy...
Has anyone jumped in on the buy? Might be something I would like to get.

Maz94Protege April-3rd-2002 08:44 PM

damn, what would the bigger valves do? more airflow?:(

I PM'd him over on the miataforum and he said that there's been 'a pretty low' response so far...he still wants to do it; just waiting on more interest.

And i'm :(, but i don't think this will work on the DX SOHC; as the valves and their 'seats' are bound to be different?!

Oh and guess what? When i started my car last night after it had sat for 2 days, i had the usual 'lifter noise', BUT one? of the lifters (1st time its ever happened) kept 'at it' for a few seconds :(

protejay April-4th-2002 12:08 AM

my head is spinning....

....good thoughts there Jesse...will be interesting to see what replys you get.

Yes I do have a DX, but the valves, if I were to buy them, would not go into my 16-valve SOHC. I'm building a NA engine on the side, which is DOHC.
