Can water get into those custom intakes under the hood?

I wanted to put a k&n cone air filer in place of my stock air box but I am afraid if water could get in itCan it???

I have a cutsom intake and so far it's been fine......It would be really hard for water to get up there..........
not unless you go through like a puddle that's a foot deep......
get the intake........water should be something that will not be a problem!

mazdaspeedwest March-18th-2002 10:39 PM

it won't be a problem, i have a CAI and a hole cut in the metal exposing the filter to direct air and the elements, even though i live in Cali and it rains but 2 weeks a year, i have not had any probs even in a downpour on the freeway.

Water IS something to be worried about, but not with an intake in the engine bay. If you manage to flood that, the intake wasnt the problem, it was that you decided you owned a boat instead of a car.

I know that water COULD be a problem, but you know what I meant:squint fi :squint fi :squint fi

I might be able to chime in on this one. Have an open cone filter with a ram air hood scoop directly above it. The clearence between the holes in the hood & the cone filter is only about a quarter inch.

You can see pictures by clicking the link in my sig.

Sitting parked no rain gets in. You would have to look at the pictures closely and or see it in person.

While driving in the rain or washing the car the amount of water that gets in there is very minimal.

And that little amount won't hurt anything, nothing under that scoop but an open cone filter. :)

Any dampness on the filter collected by the filter evaporates or dries out quickly.

And to add:

-Every hear of water injection?
-You know a water mixture with fuel will produce more power?
-WWII German FW-190 had water injection called MW50 for performance under 20,000 ft AND nitrous for higher altitudes.
-My buddy's 71 Mach1 had a water bottle under the hood for water injection.
-Ever drive on a cool night after a rain storm and notice your car seems to be running really good? (only if your ignition system is 100% up to par)

My point is.......

That "little bit" of dampness on the open cone filter will only improve performance. Cool damp heavy dense air is the kind of air you fossel fuel burning engine loves the most.

It might decrease the life of the filter, and get dirty faster, but I'm not concerned with that. :)

ive had no problems. i even power wash my engine, and it still doenst effect the intake filter.

So do it, very inexpensive mod!;)
