BP engine and Breathers

ok i saw a engine with those little breathers (look like really tiny conic. cones) on those 2 spots, first what does that line going to the engine do and is it hurting something if the hose isnt connected and replaced with breathers?

yup thats my engine btw

What I've heard is it relieves positive crankcase pressure?? I don't know what the hell that is or how it helps though:dunno:

Identity_X May 18, 2003 05:38 PM

IMO the breathers are garbage and will do more harm than good.

vtec-this May 19, 2003 12:28 AM

how do you figure? Isnt it just sucking in air? How could that hurt it? Don't they just help make things easier when adapting an aftermarket or custom intake?

Bruce95fmla May 19, 2003 01:29 PM

Does anyone have one? , and does it just make a mess of the damn valve cover?

vtec-this May 19, 2003 02:19 PM

ive got one because i had to put it on cause my new intake doesnt have a spot for the hose from the crankcase. It looks decent, though a bit ricy...Don't bother with it unless you get a new intake cause i really doesnt do anything.

Hasn't PCV been on cars as an emissions device since 1963 or so? I'd just leave it on, instead of dumping your unburned fuel on the ground

Protege91LX May 20, 2003 08:44 AM

If you are gonna leave the PCV lines connected I would recommend putting a fuel filter of some sort between the Intake and the valve cover, if you look on the inside of the hoses you will see lots of oil built up in there, that is from the PCV valve letting the air pressure out of the head, and when it does this a little bit of oil goes into the intake. The little breather dosent hurt anything, just lets the air into the atmosphere. And might have a little bit of an effect on your emissions.

i have a breather it gets dirty pretty quick didn't notice any change in hp or tq but no change in engine performance

so what other idea would you have for the valve? Alot of intake systems require these filters since they dont have an adaption piece on the tube. Mazda engines tend to burn oil anways, a small amount coming out from the breather shouldnt be anything to worry about. So relax and slap your wife or something, leave me alone.....freaking tree hugger:the finge

It shouldn't be that hard to make the piece fit any aftermarket hose or pipe.

vtec-this May 20, 2003 09:01 PM

but why bother drilling a hole into your nice new intake when you can spend $5 and put a dumb breather on?
