Adjustable Cam Gears dynoed

Did this as well when i went to SWAT the other night. Just haven't been able to post info yet - and there wasn't much incentive to do so due to the results:

Mark thought the power would be in the exhaust cam...

1st run - retarded exhaust 4 degrees: lost power everywhere

2nd run - exhast same; retarded intake 4 degrees: gained some power back - down low - WHEN compared to 1st run...

3rd run - exhaust same; *advanced* intake 2 degrees: gained ~ 3 ft lbs around 2600 RPM; losses everywhere else

4th run - intake same; advanced exhaust 2 degrees: no real change

that's all we tried. mark thought if anything, perhaps continuing to advance the intake some *may* result in some power. i showed him on Randy's site where the best miata setting has been around 6-8 degrees retard on the exhaust cam. we didn`t try it, though, because he thought that IF that held true for the pro....we would have seen a power gain 'trend' with the 1st run's setting -4 on the exhaust.
he thinks the lack of good results on the pro at least partly lies in the fact that the 94-7 Miata doesn't have VICS.....and so the miata *has* something to gain whereas the pro(with VICS) doesn't.
evidently Mazda just did a good job of timing the pro's BP; they didn't leave any to gain.

sorry i don't have specifics...they were so unimpressive that i didn't even get the charts. now i wish i had :( he's still got them, though, and i may get them one day as it'd actually be interesting to compare the differences between each run.

the MOST max hp i remember was ~ 118. that stayed fairly consistent with each successive run. the stock setting was overall definitely the best.

one other note; in another post i said that the marks on UR's cam gears are just painted....actually they are MACHINED AND painted.

Did you check the timing each time you played with the exhaust cam. The timing his going to change when you play with it. That may be the difference between the two (Miata and your pro)

We kept it the same for each run; that's partly why we did the 3 runs in a row with the exhaust cam at -4. it was pretty neat...he used the exhaust gear to time the engine - instead of the factory marks. we couldn't find or even see the factory marks from above...i know i've seen them before, but they sure are hard to see with all the belts and pulleys in the way.
