99+ miata head swap guide
 
hey everyone, I havent been on protegeclub for quite some time since i bought my mx6, but im back into tuning bp motors so i thought i would give yall a little info on a great swap that is quite cost efficient considering you can get one of these miata heads for around $250.

Im going to be swapping a 99 head onto my 91 bp soon. For those interested in the swap here is a link to a complete walkthrough minus intake mani installation.

For the intake manifold i am looking into seeing how well the 2nd gen bp mani will fit because i know the stock 1st gen bp manifold will need some fabbing to get it to work. To simplify the process you could search for a manifold like this:

Although the mani is on a miata in the pic a few people are using them in EGTs. This is a more expensive alternative.

None of the stuff in the side bar on your site worked for me.
You won't be able to Swap that head onto your pro.
The head was redesigned for 99.
The intake ports are moved to a different position.
You WILL need a custom Manifold. Fabbing an adapter to use the Protege manifold will probably cost just as much if not more, will yield minimal results and may not even fit due to space limitations in the protege engine compartment. I could be wrong about that last one though.
If yo can do it that'd be great though I'd like to get a set of cams from the 99-01 Miata myself.

if your car is turboed it's a great upgrade
yes u will need a new manifold but thats not hard, many shops can make one for you

and the 2nd gen pro bp intake manifold won't work the 99+ head(nb head) has raised intake ports so it's wont line up at all

ohh and the nb head has soild lifters(i think, or just better ones) and stiffer springs for higher rpm

the swap can be done to any bp. Im not sure why you cant see the swap guide, its under engine/intake on the left side and called m2 head swap once its little subdirectory is opened.

As for the intake manifold not fitting thanks for the info, but ill get around it;) The head swap is definately worth the effort, heres a little info on it:


The 1999-00 Miata uses basically the same 1.8 ‘B’ as the 1994-1997 but it was again revised. The 'BP-4W' engine uses a block with higher compression pistons to 9.5:1 from 9.0:1. The head had the most enhancements, the intake ports were raised from 39 degrees to 51 degrees to create a straighter flow path (the exhaust ports did not change), the hall effect cam angle sensor (CAS) was removed from the back of the head and replaced with a magnetic sensor and toothed wheel on the front of the crankshaft (a second magnetic sensor was added to the intake cam gear pulley to verify timing), and solid lifter camshafts with advanced timing, more duration and lots more intake lift were introduced.
Anyways, the head will fit the block no problem, ill let you guys know how im going to get around the intake manifold when it comes time to put everything together:D A bunch of people have done the swap on miata.net and are really happy with it, best $250 you can spend if going N/A and it will work great with turbo too.

BTW-other members of miata.net are using the 01 head with VVT and are using a window switch to control the variable valve timing. I may look into this head rather than the 99, but im going to wait until i can get a bit more info on the VVT.
