'94 Eclipse Tranny Q....

Sorry guys i really didn't know where i should post this, but i just got a 94 eclipse and it is a little hard to put it into 1st, 3rd, & 5th gears (all the gears along the top). The rest of the gears are just fine. It isn't impossible to shift just takes about 2-3 times as much force than usual. What do you guys think it is?? It has a short shifter on it could that have caused the problem?? Whgat do the synchros do, could they be gone. Well thanks guys i'm hopeing it is just the linkage or something that way i don't have to buy another tranny.

eclipse tranny's are for shit... automatic and manual. i don't know of any 90 to 94 eclipse in my area that hasn't sent their car in for problems with their transmission or a directly related problem. i'm not a transmission expert, sorry. good luck.

Allright thanks for the responses guys i found a tranny here for 300 bucks that i think im gonna put in it. I got the car for free basically. I'm painting someone's car and they are provideing all of the materials. I just plan to sell the car anyways. Do you think if i ask $2,000 on it, it would be too much? I'm thinking of doing a custom paint job on it too, so it'll sell quicker. For sure i am going to repaint it though.

Trans isn't bad...yet.

OK now that you have heard from people who blew up trannys, hear from one who had the same problem and go get a new set of shift cables. The cables get old and stretch so that the shifting gets "hard". They usually get hard in first third and fifth first because that cable (the fore and aft cable i think) tends to stretch first. If, at this time, you DONT get the cables and adjust THEM and the SHIFTER....then you blow up your tranny. If you do this right, it will shift like a dream...make sure that you have the right type of fluid in it too. It should take ATF, dexron mercon III, but check the manual first.

Thanks for the response i'll check that out. I was going to disconnect the cables from the tranny and see if it got smoother, but haven't got around to it yet. The car isn't driven much so no more damage is being done to it.. Thanks again.;)

I just happen to own a dsm. The shift cables needs to be adjusted. It's no big deal I had to do it. Just get a 15 dollar haynes manual it will tell you how to do it. Or rip the center console apart. Adjust the cable that moves when you move the shifter forward and back, there is an adjusting nut. Just make sure the shifter sits exactly between the front and back stop in nuetral.
