93 protege has non-interference motor or not?
 

Hi, guys:
My 93 protege has 130K miles on it, so far it has been almost trouble free car, only changed a belt, a wire and CV joints besides normal battery and tires wear.

Anyone know that the 93 protege has non-nterference motor or not? Because it's on its 130K so I am supposed to change the timing belt for the 2nd time but I don't have the time to do it recently, so basically I want to know if the belt went down,will it damage the engine?

Correct, non interference. Which for all intents and purposes means you now will never change the belt even when you have free time. You will wait until you end up selling it or something else goes bad and junk it or give it away(or sell cheaply to a family member),etc. Or, on the other hand, the belt breaks on you before that and you lose the gamble. Does that sound about right?

That sounds alright. I'll choose not to replace it until it went down by itself or until I sell/juk it.

Don't double post

When we came across my 1990 LX, we got it for free because it would overheat in 5 minutes.

So, we fixed the gasket just to see if it still ran. We didn't spend money on belts and other stuff because we just wanted to see if the gasket was indeed the problem, and make sure the head wasn't warped or anything. Turns out, everything was cool. So we just drove it.

That was 40k miles and 3 years ago. This passed Thanksgiving Day, my belt broke on the highway about 15 miles from home.

Towing cost about $175. Subsequently, the belt cost $40. My advice is this: Even if you'll sell it when it breaks, you'll need to tow it home.

ALL Mazda 4cyl engines are non interference EXCEPT for the F2
Which was never in a Protege.
PROTEGE OWNERS BREATH A SIGH OF RELIEF YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT YOUR ENGINES GETTING FUCKED IF YOUR TIMING BELT BREAKS.

heh, can't say the same for my mom's cadillac catera :( bottom line, even if you don't have the money, if you plan on keeping the car for more than 2 years, i'd go ahead and pre-emptively change your p/s and alternator belts, and also your water pump if you've got the extra 60 for more coolant and the pump itself.
