4wd protege GTX conversion
 

hey yall,

i was just wondering, if i was to buy a 90 4wd protege with the SOHC 1.8 in it, would the GTX 4wd tranny bolt right in? The protege is currently auto, ive done an auto to 5-speed swap before so i know what i would normally need (linkage, shifter assembly, clutch pedal assembly etc.) but would i have to change the axles around at all? I had to change them on my 91 EGT when i swapped, but if i could use the auto axles with the gtx 5-speed tranny it would be one less thing to worry about....

I don't think the axles will fit, I could be wrong though. I seem to remember reading in the FAQ that the tranny in the AWD pro is the same as from the GTX.

I believe they are the same; there have been several posts about this subject. Try doing a search for "GTX CONVERSION" in the search feature up above.

to most of you that actually try and utilize the search, you will notice our wonderful 10% search success rate, you ACTUALLY DON'T FINDING ANYTHING, hand search through threads. there is a plethera of information at our disspossal, just a damn shame we can't search it.

you could try this , but why ... the reason I would be against it is because, GTX 4wd trans. are hard to find. And from what I have been reading they are not the strongest neither.
You really have to ask yourself where you would be able to get spare parts from if something goes wrong. If you can get spare parts for that 4wd tranny then sweet. but if not when something goes wrong your shit out of luck, no matter what anyone on this board says..

I wish I had the funds to do the GTX conversion; I have the car, plus another one sitting up in Alaska at my parent's place (if I actually needed spare parts); There's at least 2 more that I've seen JUST in Fairbanks. I was told once by a Mazda dealership that they had sold quite a few of those there in Alaska... But, alas, I'm buying a motorcycle instead ;)
As for weak transmissions, I wouldn't really know (but haven't had a bit of problem with mine). The 1.8L engine with only 103hp doesn't really give enough kick to hurt much of anything. Myself, I'd rather just stick in a BP, then turbo it later on down the road...

If i get a front clip, the tranny will be intact. Im sure i could also get one through any company that supplies the GTX or GTR.

I have one behind the house if you want it. I received it with the gtx engine and the guy didn't want to sell the engine without the tranny.

A G pr F tranny at most local yards are like 300 dollars.
how much do you think you will pay in US$$ to have a tranny imported from the UK, ASIA, Or the like..
I know in Jamaica they are complaining of gearbox problems on the gtx and also saying that finding a Spare box is hard as hell.. Same thing in UK , but I figure they should have a little better suply...

i know of 4 people right now that are willing to sell me their gtx trannies since whenever people get the engine and trans they have no use for it, so it just sits around. as long as i could get around the axle issue, i think i will be safe.....

They're strong, but the spider gears in the diff are not. That's what will go first. (Actually, it is what holds the spider gears in place that is the weak link.) If he has the cash to buy a front clip, I'm sure he has the cash to buy the mazdaspeed LSD. Boom. Problem solved.

As for gears... Sure, if you're launching it at every light, you'll eventually miss and grind the gears away. Normal driving, say, where you're already going 30+ and decide to downshift to speed up, the gears will hold up to any thing you give it mind you the gears are changed nicely. :)

To make sure the gears receive as little stress as possible, I'd put some Redline MTL. I'm not sure if the GTX gearbox requires MTL or MT-90. Make sure to check before, if you actually plan to use Redline Oil in the gearbox.

Actually, thinking about it, putting the MSP LSD in there may require modification of the output shaft to the rear wheels. The splines may be different. I'm sure a good machine shop could do it. If it were to be done, you wouldn't have to worry too much about the tranny giving out.

wouldn't most of this depend on his budget, machine shop work is not often cheap. I am not sure what budget he is working on, but if finance holds a person back.. ???

That msp LSD would be sweet to have on any of our Protege's ..

The car will be purchased in September. My "team" and I (me and my drunk car buddies) are looking into making this a non-street legal/emissions passing car and have no plans of street racing it. It will only be for rallying and possibly autocross every now and then. We have a massive barn with a lift, lots of nice tools, beer and most importantly time and money. Luckily since there is 5 of us the cost wont be as high as if i did it myself! Im hoping we can get a good clip and not one that has a busted tranny and raped engine......Anyways, the car will be totally gutted. We are in the process of designing and building the roll cage and with a bit of luck, this thing will haul some ass!

(we were originally going to make the car a 4wd Escort gt, but the 4wd conversion is too complicated and costly for us)
