i will make you one w/cold air extension for $145 but i don't have any air filters.

(pictured below is without hbox and ya can't see the cai extension)

Darryl - How much would you charge for the part between the vaf and the tb, including all the pipes and hoses, with my hbox installed? I've got a PRM intake on order for the other side of the vaf to replace my K&N cone.

mazdaspeedwest January-31st-2003 08:44 PM

i don't have any couplers (except for the black ones pictured) or air filters.

$85.00

I would be very interested in picking up the piping from the Vaf to the TB. I can pick up some silicone couplers from Road Race Engineering, so that's a non issue for me.

If you can PM me with the where I can send the $85.00, I 'll get that out to you. I did have a couple questions regarding the intake in the meantime:

* What is the hbox? I checked my workshop manny and the search function and could find no definitive explanation for what it was. Is this a reference to the resonator box before the VAF?

*Is the intake youd be making for anyone interested finished as nicely as it is in your CarDomain.com pic? Or is the finishing up to me?

*What sort of turnaround time should I expect for the piping and what is it made of?

*Install question - I have a hose that connects the bottom left of my resonator box to the engine just below the thermostat housing (not the Cranckcase ventilation hose that connects to the intake pipe). Is the bung you have nearest the battery now where this hose would connect to the engine?

The intake looks sharp on your car. Did the pipe make any noticeable difference? Any info you can provide would be great. Thanks!!!

correct, the black resonator box beforethe VAF, Heimoltz <sp> box.

yes, as pictured

1 week, aluminumized exhaust tubing.

yes, if you do not install the hbox, that nipple (bung) will be there. But if you plan to keep the hbox, the pipe will be a bit shorter and no nipple. But the cranckcase vent will be there in both cases.

I went thru alot of different intakes, all seat of the pants dyno tested and this one felt like it had better throttle response and was a hair torquer feeling. But I can't say for sure.

includes:
2 pipe sections (w/optional 3rd section for CAI)
1 or 2 hoses, depending on style
1 or 2 hose nipples, depending on style
2 black couplers w/clamps
aluminum heat painted inside and out

NOTE: CAI extension may require the relocation of the coolant overflow tank.

So do you think I should go without the hbox? Maybe I misread your how-to mods on your site, but I didn't think you had the hbox installed in any of your permutations. I really don't want to lose any low-end torque. I've driven my buddy's '91 DX a few times and it seems like he has more low-end torque than I do.

Here's another wrinkle (maybe). I just picked up a RX-7 VAF on eBay last night. I remember reading another post here about not having enough room for a PRM/RX-7 VAF/Hbox. What's your take on that?

mazdaspeedwest February-1st-2003 11:01 PM

that pic is kinda old and i don't have new ones, but it all fits fine in my car, pipes, CAI, RX7 VAF and all. Mind you, i did relocate the coolant overflow tank to make it a bit easier to fit.

I wanted to test them with and without the hbox (wish i had dyno time) the pics just happen to be when i grabbed the camera, so some may show it, some may not.

with the newest (and last) one, i felt maybe a hair difference in regular day to day driving with the hbox. The biggest difference was racing, i could get more pull out of the corners in low 2nd gear.

Well, I put my PRM in tonight and it looks really good ... but since looks weren't the main objective, I took it for a thorough test spin :D. This intake, along with the Borla, has really made my car lose a few of it's inhibitions ;) and as I pushed it up to 6K, my butt-dyno could feel a nice gain!

While installing the intake, I noticed that the oem pipe from the vaf to tb is cracked in the middle bellows section. I have futzed with it too many times, plus it's really old. So, out came the duct tape, but it's just a temporary fix. I definitely need to replace the pipe.

Darryl - a few questions:

1. Your vaf is really far over to the fender, unlike mine with the PRM. Mine is pretty much in it's oem location and the PRM down-pipe wont let it go over any more. Can you make the pipes fit with this in mind? I think your pipes might be too long ...

2. You mentioned on your site that you're still using the HKS vaf adapter instead of the plastic one from Weapon-R. Since my RX-7 vaf hasn't arrived yet, could you tell me if the 4 bolt pattern is the same? Will my PRM adapter for the Pro vaf also fit the RX-7 vaf?

3. Your crank and hbox hoses look like the same ones that came with your Weapon-R (?). When you make new ones to sell are you going to use blue hoses or black? And are you going to use a large enough diameter hose for the hbox nipple and use a clamp? It looks like you have that hose taped onto the bung with electrical tape (I know that pic doesn't have an hbox tho). Prolly a stupid question, but just thought I'd ask.

4. Can you include the adapters from the pipe to the hbox and hbox to vaf? I'd rather not have to run around trying to find them ...

Thanks dude!

Just give me a measurement fron the fender to the VAF and i'll make it to fit.

Bolt holes are the same, althought the RX7 VAF uses bolts, while the OEM vaF has studs and nuts.

that pic is actucally the first prototype...i put on the wrong size nipple, but the hose slipped inside and i just sealed it with the tape for testing. The hose will slide over the actual nipple.

No idea yet as to if i'll have colors or not, if not most likely black.

I'll see what i can do.

Hey thanks Darryl ... I'm gonna wait 'til my new vaf comes and get you the measurements, maybe even snap a pic too. So, can you custom paint a Mazdaspeed logo on the pipes too? hehe j/k! :p

YO WIL! Make one and sell it. If anyone has seen Wil's (Groharlem) Custom Installation on his Intake. You might like it. I know i do. Personally i think he should produce and sell them. If not you can buy a 3rd Gen intake the DRAGON STYLE one i forget the company that makes it. and that intake fits.....might need to trim it. But it works.
