1.8L sohc to 1.8L dohc or gtx/gtr
 
I was wondering about how much it will cost to swap my 1.8L sohc to a 1.8L dohc or should i save more and get a gtx or gtr??because i was really thinking about doin a swap and needed to know how much it would cost

I don't think you need to change the block, you can probably change only the head and the ecu (i'm 85% sure).

You can probably get a head for 100-150$ from a scrap yard but I would strongly suggest to have it rebuilt before you put it in your car.

But now how much can a head rebuilt cost?:dunno:

Since we didn't get the dohc protege in canada I know I can take the a head from an old escort gt but what about a head from a miata?

I know it has the same displacement but the miata has from 128hp to 140hp...but then maybe it has to do with the pistons...

We got the DOHC. It was in the GT model .. don't know if it was in any other model.

maybe the intake / inj would need a swap too

PseudoRealityX...so my SOHC in my LX protege would be strong enough to handle a turbo?!!! Cool!!! I'm guessing the DOHC has more potential HP with a turbo than the SOHC with a turbo right?

But that's pretty kewl stuff...I guess instead of the swap, I can save the money and work on a turbo system for the SOHC. How about the oil line to the turbo...will it have to be custom also then?

90&00 Protege: I've been loocking for a protege gt on the road for almost 2 years now and I have never even seen one with a fake gt badge.


Now try to find a dohc head from a gt.:rolleyes:

The 1990-91 & 1993 Protege GT had the DOHC 1.8L. Granted, there aren't many out there - 1,500 1990s, 1,500 1991s, & 500 1993s, but we certainly DID get the DOHC motor.

Totally different intake on the Protege versus the Miata. The Protege had variable length intake runners and makes it's max torque far lower down in the rev range than the (by comparison) peaky Miata motor.

FYI:
1994-1995 Miata - 1.8L DOHC - 128bhp
1996-1997 Miata - 1.8L DOHC - 133bhp
1999-2000 Miata - 1.8L DOHC - 140bhp
2001-2002 Miata - 1.8L DOHC - 142bhp

Go look at the Mazda 4-cylinder interchange guide at www.solomiata.com - it'll help with your search.

I was almost certain that the 92-up Canadian SE model also had the DOHC. A friend of mine had one, but got rid of it before I got my Pro and he was never really into cars, but he was sure his had been DOHC... I may be wrong, but that's the info I've been going on for 2 years. He was'nt into cars at the time, his dad gave it to him and I'm not even sure he ever popped the hood except to check the oil... But he's sure his was DOHC? Am I wrong? That would better explain why the local scrapyards in Montreal have no shortage in DOHC Pro engines...

About the SOHC turbo... I'm in if a project is gonna be started... Also, How much power are we prolly looking at with a stock BPT turbo or even with a T28 Mitsubushi turbo (common on ebay).

Hello,
I'm new here, but have a question about this thread. I just bought a 90 LX with the 1.8L DOHC (that burns enough oil to make the EPA cry) and don't quite understand what you're saying. Is mine a "true" DOHC? FYI, I also have a 92 Escort GT with the "EXACT" same motor ('cept for the Mazda/Ford on the valve cover). Did the LX's not have a DOHC?

the DX protege has 16 valves - but just 1 cam (SOHC). your LX, as well as GT, have 16 valves, but 2 cams - 1 for exhaust, 1 for intake... a 'true' DOHC.
by the way, send an email to Racing Beat if you're interested in some headers or any other parts- you've now got 2 cars that could use em!(i'm not going to giv up on this!!!)

I thought that I was correct, but you never know with Mazda. I bought my 92 Escort GT new and nobody believes me when I tell them that it has a Mazda engine in it (which is why it's still running strong with over 185,000 miles on it). I haven't desided yet what I want to do with the Protege yet (i.e. rebuild it, use as donor car for Escort, part it, etc). It runs strong, but smokes really bad until it's warm (driving around for 5-10 minutes) and has some damage to it (scrape down drivers side and other minor dents/dings and a little cancer (not bad)). I wouldn't mind using it for a daily driver except for the smoke. But since I only paid $300 for it, I don't want to soak money into it (would rather spend it on the Escort).

Yah, I have an SE too, but I thougt that mine was SOHC cuz it was older... As I said in the other post, I wasn't sure about the other years, just wanted to make sure. Thanks for setting me straight! ignorance sux.

Also, about the turbo, I was thinking that a T3 would prolly be a little big for my engine to spool it up... It'd be crap for everyday driving, would'nt it? I was told that a T28 would be better suited for an engine with a low base HP rating...
