Automatic transmission

I have a 2000 protege LX automatic
and every now and then, the transmission does something wierd
What it basically does is that I am around 37mph
and around the 4th gear.
The car suddenly and harshly jerks, dropping to 3rd gear, and then pulling up to 5th gear
Notice...I am not racing or reving high. This is normal acceleration and the rpm is from 2.5-3K per min.
If anybody notices that, please inform me
and if anybody has any knowledge about it please educate me about this problem
Any help is appreciated
Thanks in advance!!

i have a 99 lx auto and i experienced something similiar to that, my check engine light started flashing when it got really bad, and it turned out that my ignition coil was bad and it needed to be replaced, it was basically causing my number 4 cylinder to misfire, i changed it and the problem went away. i hope that helps, but i suggest that if you dont have any work done in the engine bay to just take it to the dealer and have them look at it.

Yeah, I will get this thing checked out, 'cause it used to do
that, then it stopped for like 6 months, now it happened
twice in 1 week. The engine light does not come on or anything, but the car is still under warranty, so what the hell
Thanks!!

and if it is not you wires and spark plugs check you trans mission fluid and if all good (wires, plugs, and fluid) it might be you transmission slipping out of gears

Thought the automatic only had 4 drive gears not 5.

It DOES have 4 gears
however, if you sit in one and drive and count the
gear shifts(4), you will suppose that there are 5 drive gears
Don't know how and why, but that is the way it is
If anybody could shed some light on the subject
will be appreciated
Thanks in advance

As you know all new automatics have an lock-up converter

I have an automatic too

As you know all new automatics have an lock-up torque converter and what you feel as a shift could be the converter locking up( not slipping for better gas mileage) which is normal . What possibly could be is that there is a problem with locking of the converter which throws it into 3 gear.

There are only four gears. After the shift to 4th, the torque converter locks and drops the engine RPM a little. It fcan feel like an additional gear but I can promise you, it's only a four speed auto.

your solenoid could be going out... shifting in auto tranny are control by 2 solenoids. different combination gives you different gear. Hope you still have your warranty... most shops don't bother to open the tranny up and replace the solenoids (if that is the problem). They just replace them... Good luck!

considering this thread is 2 years old and no other post has been made about it, i think he's ok now. and your website doesn't show any information about the product you are mentioning. in fact, your website doesn't say anything about anything.
