Hold On Dash

My battery died today and I got a jump off in my Mazda Protege 1994. After a while the HOLD flashed on in my dash. Did I press something?

How dead was the battery? The 1st thing I'd do is put it on a battery charger in trickle mode for 5-6 hours.

A quick jump wont charge the battery.
