Superprotege ran 11.9s in the 1/4 mile, now building supermazda3

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum but I would like to share with this community, the plan of a performance shop, I am associated with to build a race ready mazda3 to compete in the 2008 NOPI Dracing Series (NHRA Sports Compact Racing Series). The name of the shop is TBK Performance (tbkperfromance.net), locate in Doral, FL, USA. Manuel, the owner and mechanic is the brother of Juan, who owns Hiboost (Hiboost.com). I bought a brand new 2002 mazda protege LX in 11/2002 and with the help of TBK Performance and Hiboost, the car run 11.9s at 114 miles in the quarter mile at Moroso Motorsports on 7/27/06. The car also competed in NHRA Drag Racing Series on 4/2/06 and ran 12.2s at 111 mph. Please see the links below to support this info:

I have the dyno slip showing the 11.9s run but it is a link to msprotege.com where I am member. I am not sure if I can link to another forum in this forum. I am sorry the vidoes are not great because we did not have a good camera.

Superprotege is still racing and waiting the completion of supermazda3. TBK Performance is the new owner of superprotege, I sold it to Manuel. TBK is currently building a brand new 2.3L Mazda3 into a monster capable of competing in Nopi Drag Racing Series, Turbo Street Class at Moroso Motorsport Park, 4/5-6. The car belongs to a business man who bought the car for TBK to build it.

Supermazda3 has already been dynoed, putting down a base round of 144.97 whp and 143.30 torque on a really cold day.

TBK in collaboration with Hiboost is planning to have both cars ready for the event and are seeking additional sponsors. We are hoping to have a video journal if time permits of the build.

The main point of the build is a large turbo, sleeved block (from 2.3L to 2.6L) and a sick tune.

Purpose

My purpose in posting this thread is not to show off what my ex- car has done but to share with the Mazda community what mazdas can do. I am hoping that once supermazda3 does good at NOPI in 4/5/08, TBK Performance/Hiboost can get official sponsorship so we can compete at more events. I work for a utility company but have dreamed to sell performance parts, go to shows and the tracks for a living. So, I am hoping that this thread fosters enthusiasm and once TBK/Hiboost get sponsored, it will selling more products and I can leave my job as a utility worker someday to become a performance parts sales rep for them.

Please see the list of mods below. The car was daily driven when owned it and is still being daily driven by Manuel. Supermazda3 will also be daily driven by the owner. The 11.9s 1/4 mile run was done on the IHI Turbo (VF22) that comes with Hiboost Standard Kit. The car is currently being tested on the Hiboost Big Boost Kit to try to realize the full potential of the T3TO4E Turbo. We are hoping to run between 11.5s- 11.7s soon.

Engine Mods: Hiboost Big Boost Turbo Kit w/FMIC & Haltech F10X, 38mm Tial Wastegate, Pauter Rods & CP Pistons, 650cc injectors, Walboro 255 LPH fuel pump, HKS SSQV BOV, S&R Motorsport JDM Cams and adjustable Cam Gear, B&M Short Throw Shifter, 3"inch down pipe and exhaust, ACT 6 puck Disc with Extreme Pressure Plate and Stock Flywheel, VICS & VTCS removed manifold (IHI Turbo: 286 whp & 288 torque and 297 whp on T3/TO4E on 93 octane)

Appearance: WingsWest Front Bumper, ACS Hood, Mazdaspeed Sideskirts, Rearskirts and Rear Wing, HPR5 17x7 rims and Radio Bezel for A/F and Boost Gauge,Slotted, Precision 13" Crossdrilled & Slotted Front Rotors, Corbeau CR1 Seats, HID Headlights, Grounding Kit and HKS TI Muffler.

Update

Thanks Jake, the royalities will come once we start getting sponsors. Please call me about the sound system for the car.

We are running behind schedule. We are hoping the sleeving of the block will be finished this week and the turbo + other parts come in also. The street wheels have been picked up and I will take pics soon installed on the car.

Installed parts:
Rear Swaybar installed
Lowering Springs and shocks

I am getting alittle nervous because the race is 4/5/08 but hopefully, a couple late nights work + good weather to test and tune at the track will help us do good.

That's a really really nice car!! Fastest Protege I've seen yet. Too bad no one here will really respond to it .. cuz this a dead forum. Has been for about 6 months now.

Join us over at TheMazdaForum instead, a lot of old school members hanging out.

Update

Unfortunately, we are going to have to go with plan B instead of A because the engine builder informed us that the sleeving of the block will not be ready for the race this week due to family crisis. The built head for superprotege is ready though.

We are now building the stock engine with Pauter Rods and Wiseco Pistons. The turbo for the sleeve block is too big for stock block so we are going to use a GT35R.

We are still waiting for some other parts to come in this week but we started disassembling the engine tonight. Hopefully we can be tuning both cars at the dyno on Friday and go to the track Friday evening.

Update

The work continues to try to get superprotege and supermazda3 ready for nhra sports compact racing series sponsored by Nopi this weekend.

The first picture is supermazda3 with its pistons out, waiting for the wiseco pistons to be installed

The second picture is superprotege with its head off waiting for built head to be installed.

The head below is the bigger head for superprotege. The head was ported & polished on the intake and exhaust side, has bigger valves and tighter springs.

See the comparison below between the stock head and the ported & polished head

We had a rough today

Just wanted to give you guys an update on what happened today.

We spend the majority of the day working on Supermazda3 trying to get it ready but we ran in several problems such burning 2 coils, bad 1000cc injectors and blown engine fuse. Supermazda 3 was finally cranked up for the first time after the build at 4:30 pm and was street tuned on the way to the track. We had put what we thought were 750cc injectors to replace the bad 1000cc but discovered, while street tuning, that the injectors were only 550cc. We were only able to safely boost 16 psi on these injectors.we

When arrived at the track, Turbo Street Class was running and we were told it was too late to pass inspections for that class. We were advised that the only class we could run in was the bracket class. Our plan was to run Supermazda3 in the Turbo Street Class and Superprotege in the bracket class because Manuel would be driving both cars. This plan had to be revised based on when we arrived at the track.

Supermazda3 ran a 13 seceond pass on its intially run and on the second run, it went down to 12.7s at 16 psi. Superprotge ran with full exhaust (we thought open exhaust was not allowed in the bracket class) a dissappointing 12.9s. The car was boosting 23 psi but had shifting issues in 2nd gear and was affected by the fulll exhaust.

We are planning to change the injectors on Supermazda3 to 750cc for tomorrow and turn up the boost. We are planning to turn up the boost on Superprotege, do some street tuning (has not been retuned since the new head was installed) and run open exhaust. We are not going to try to stay consistent tomorrow as you should in bracket racing but we are just going to run hard and call it a day.

We are very dissappointed with the results but are very happy that we got a 2008 Mazda3 race ready in 3 days. We did not think we were going to make it. The car looks sick with the slicks and skinnies on it. I forget my camera at the shop and will upload the pics and hopefully videos of tomorrow's runs (no video was taken for today's runs).

Stay tuned

We arrived at the tracks after 1:30 pm on Sunday and within an hour the rain started coming down. The rest of the event was cancelled due to the lightining accompanying the rain.

Before going to the tracks, we verified that the injector on Supermazda3 were 550cc not 750cc. We changed them and street tuned the car on the way to the tracks. The car was pulling very strong at 18psi. We street tested Superprotege also and it is running like a monster now with the new head.

We are planning to go the tracks on a early on a Friday to see what times both cars are running.

Before the rain came down at the tracks, we had an oppourtunity to speak with one of the techs for Karagiannis Racing who are running a fully built Mazda3 in the Modified Class. They are using the same 2.3L engine sleeved like we plan to do, decked and some other secret things that he would not tell us. The tech advised that with no nitrous and 40-50 psi, they are making 1300 whp. I did not know then but I just checked the results and founds out that they were the #1 qualifiers in their class at 7.456s and 180.97 mph. We are encouraged about the potential of the 2.3L engine.

Once we get the sleeved block and built head for Supermazda3, it should make some big power. I am going to take some pics of the turbo for built engine.

It's been a while but we are still racing

I have been very busy at work and have not been on the forum in a while. We went to a mazda meet on 4/18/08 at Moroso Motorsports Park but did not do as well as we wanted and this is another reason why I have not posted anything either.

Results

Superprotege ran 122 mph (its highest mph to date) but missed 4th gear and only ran 12.0.

Supermazda3 ran 12.3 @ 108 mph at around 17-18 psi.

Status of the big engine for Supermazda3

While the builder was in the process of sleeving the block, he discovered a crack in the engine block and that engine block would not safe to run 30+ psi. We need to get a new engine or buy a used one with low miles. We have applied for sponsorship to complete the project and are awaiting the outcome of our request. In the meantime, we are planning to squeeze the maximum power from Supermazda3 stock engine we built like we did on the protege.

Dyno & Track Result 5/17/08 at Moroso

Dyno

Superprotege ran 397 whp like before

Supermazda3 ran 403 whp @ 22 psi

Track

Superprotege beat its previous record of 11.96 and ran 11.92 @ 117 mph

Supermazda3 ran 12.5 but the clutch was slipping on every run.

Future Plans

Moroso is now close till fall due to renovation plans for the track. We need to spend some money on Superprotege to get it to low 11s. It needs new slicks, lightened wheels and close ratio gears. We plan to do some more tuning to Supermazda3 to run more boost and if it takes, we may go to the tracks at Bradenton to see if it can hopefully run low 11s. Stay tuned

The project is still on the way

It has been awhile and even I was discouraged that the project would die. I happy to announce that we purchased a brand new 2.3L block which was dropped off to the engine builder yesterday to be sleeved and bored out to 2.6L.

Please see the pics below of the turbo that the new engine will spool. Currently, the car has a GT35R on the stock block that has been built.

The bored and sleeved block is complete and Brembro Brake Kit is here

It's been a while but the bored out and sleeved block was picked up last week. I had previously posted a picture of the wrong big turbo but please see the correct turbo that will be used with this engine. I will keep you guys updated on when this setup is ready to be dynoed.

On Thursday, 7/10/08 , the owner of Supermazda3 gave me the honor of opening the Brembo Kit that came in for the car. I felt like a kid in a candy store. We were hoping to have the car ready for Hot Import Nights Orlando on 7/19/08 but that will not happen.

The sound system has already being purchased and is currently being installed. We need to find some nice rims to with these Brembos.

Thanks to all for the continued support!
