Gas tank problem PLEASE HELP!!!!

Gas tank problem PLEASE HELP!!!!
Today when i was putting gas in my p5 i noticed that when i took the gas cap off and where i put the nozzle for the gas the little piece of metal that is suppose to cover the hole was not there. Is this normal or did it fall off inside of my tank. Please help , will this hurt my car at all or should i go to the dealer?????
