Does anyone else have a sulfur smell comming from their Protege5 after it has been driven. Mazda sent me a letter blaming it on the gas i used. They recomend not using esso gas is this true, or is it the catalytic converter?

your catalytic (proper spelling) converter causes the smell, but if you have crappy gas it can cause the cat to make that smell.

try not running cheap gas and see if it goes away.

Esso gas has the highest sulpher content in ontario's gas brands.

If your car is new i heard that companies that make their cars in Japan coat the metal stuff under the hood with some kind of seed oil or some crap that burns off after the first few hundred miles and it smells kinda funky, but these guys seem to have your problems covered already :P

Mine's been doing this for a while and how often it happens would fit right in between rarely and usually. I'm glad this was brought up because it's been hard to tell if it's my car or the others around me on the road. It seems to happen most after driving at higher road/engine speeds for a while but never when doing the slow cruise around town. I've got to try a different gas next fill up and see if things change.

ya its the different brands of gas that causes the smell....i find its especialy bad if i use 89 octain from esso!

I use 89 octane from esso all the time, but haven't noticed any smell at all. Maybe I am nose blind, but it hasn't been a problem for me.

Have not had this smell in arizona, maybe cause all the polllution smell hides it! lol

I have wrapped my aftermarket exhaust with that groovy insulated tape. (The theory is that keeping the exhaust gasses hot makes them flow faster, but I did it because my new pipes were banging against my frame, and making a bad sound.)

The instructions say you might notice an odor for a while after putting the tape on. Sure enough, after the pipes heat up you get a little bit of a smell. It smells like a pie baking in the oven. I have no idea why, but it's kind of pleasant.

But my exhaust has never smelled like sulpher.

Sulfer content in the gas is the #1 cause! Try a ethonol gas which has slightly lower levels. Ultramar and Irving gas was the best for my 01 cavalier before I traded the P.O.S. They told me it was the gas and I was irate (spelling) , but the problem was the cheap canadian tire gas!!! Try chnaging stations. First drive all the old gas out, well until low fuel light comes on and switch to a good gas. You'll see!

ESSO sucks!!! It was also one of my choices that produced the rotten egg smell!
