I don't really know much about interpreting these computer codes, but my check engine light came on yesterday. I took it to advance cause I heard they could see what the code was of the problem.

The printout I got says:

P0106
MAP/BARO
CKT Range/Perf

Am I correct in assuming the map sensor is bad? this is a 189$ part I see... kindof sucks.

What harm will be done if I wait to get it replaced?

Also, over the past year or 2 I have noticed my car having trouble driving in the mountains. Could this have been the sensor going bad? or totally unrelated?

If it was me... I'd clean it with electrical cleaner and a q-tip VERY CAREFULLY.

It is a 'wire' in the incoming gas path. It may be grunged (especially if you just oiled the K&N...)

i think u are thinking of the MAF. the MAP sensor is not a wire int he intake path. I'm having the asme problem on my 99 1.6l pro. it reads "manifold pressure signal too high". the car drives liek **** but im nto sure if its the MAP sensor, the MAF or the TPs cuz either one could make the computer think that manifold pressure is too high.

yes thats directly related. since altitude changes alter the density of air going into the engine, your MAP sensor would be part of the system that would help the ECU adjust the fuel and spark to run properly. if the MAP sensor is bad, the ECU will simply revert to a safe mode of sorts based on programmed settings to ensure that the engine will not blow up. likely your car will run richer, get poor mileage and lose power as a result.
